Garage doors improved a lot over the past decade. Not so many years ago, the driver had to get out of the car to open and close the garage door. That was a real pain, especially for those who were living in crowded and very circulated areas.

Today, garage owners can choose between several types of garage doors. Each type of door has the possibility to use various materials. Besides, doors come in many colors, therefore it is easy to choose a shade that goes well with your house exterior.

Among the most popular types of garage doors there are: roller garage doors, sectional doors, up and over doors and swing hung garage doors. Each type of door has its opwn characteristics, its advantages and drawbacks. Depending on your particular case, you may opt for one type or another.

The big advantage of roller garage doors is that they need very little space when they open, because they roll in a special box. This means that you can come very near to the entrance and the door still is able to open without any problem. Such doors are good for garages situated in narrow places.

Up and over garage doors, or overhead doors, are very popular, but they need a lot of space around them in order to be able to open completely. Because you need to stop the car quite far away from the door before it opens, such doors may not be suitable for narrow roads. You may create trouble for other cars while opening your garage door, thus creating the chance for more accidents.

If you don't have so much space, but you don't want roller garage doors, you can choose sectional doors, because they function on the same mechanism. The only difference is that the door is made of bigger chunks of material, which can make them look better. Everything else, like the springs and the opener stay the same.

If you live in a kind of a mansion, with a huge garden, then a swing hung door can be the most suitable for your garage. There are garage door manufacturers which produce real state of the art doors based on this operating principle. You've seen such doors in all classical movies.

Buying a new home dont forget to check out the garage and the garage door. Garage doors have their ups and downs. There have been very few downs for garage doors since their invention. So we're going to bring you up-to-date on everything that's going on with a simple explanation on how garage doors work. We'll show you those ups and downs and all the parts that make them go. We'll branch out a bit into the actual garages, and see how their styling has affected the design of the door itself. Remember if you are doing a home renovation or upgrade add a garage if you dont have one.

For hundreds of years, the material used for almost every kind of construction was wood. It wasn't because wood was the best insulator, or because it looked the best. It was because that was all there was. So builders did what they could with what they had. But when you look at it, they did pretty well. Garage doors evolved fairly quickly, from the old barn-door style of the carriage house, to the folding overhead door that we know today.

The first overhead garage door, which swung outwards, was built by Overhead Door Corporation, back in 1921. Since then, that company has introduced many innovations in the garage door industry. But they're not the only one, by far. One of the largest garage door manufacturers is Wayne-Dalton, who offer a full line of garage door openers and hardware, as well as their own line of high-quality doors, crafted by the meticulous Amish craftsmen. Clopay Building Products is another company that started early, and developed superior technology in their garage doors and openers. In fact, today, Clopay is the largest manufacturer of residential garage door systems in the United States.

There are a number of other companies that have made significant contributions to the industry. Stanley is probably one of the most well-known. Although there's been a split in the Stanley company, they're still contributing to the relevant technology. For example, their StanVision Door Automation and Surveillance System has been installed at the Jacksonville International Airport in Florida. And their sister company, Stanley Hardware, has a complete selection of garage door replacement parts.

And then there are the companies that specialize in garage door openers, like Liftmaster and Craftsman. Liftmaster's latest claim to fame is their EverCharge Battery Backup System, which keeps an automatic garage door opener running, even when the power goes out - a valuable tool if you need to get your vehicle out of the garage in an emergency. They also have their own line of opening systems for garage doors. Craftsman's latest contribution is their "Silent Drive" garage door opener. It uses a polyurethane belt that provides the quietest-opening door on the market. And that's important if you have a room above the garage where somebody may be sleeping.

There are several types of garage doors available. The oldest, as we mentioned, is wood. Wood is a great insulator, but doesn't stand up well to excessive weather. And wood is heavy, too. That's why manufacturers knew they had to come up with something lighter, that could insulate as well as wood. The industry's first answer to that was the steel door. Steel garage doors are made from galvanized panels of steel, attached in the same way the wood panels are in wood doors - in hinged sections that fold as the door travels up a vertical track and onto a horizontal track.

But steel isn't a good insulator, so to compensate, they double up the panels and fill the space between them with polystyrene or polyurethane insulation. Polyurethane insulates better than polystyrene, but it tends to break down after a period of time, whereas polystyrene lasts forever. Of course, if you don't need insulation, like for an outer shed or similar building, then a single-thickness steel door will do the job. Steel is very low maintenance, so the manufacturers can offer longer warranties up to several decades longer than wood.

Garage door manufacturers make good use of synthetic materials composites. You can now get a wood door that's combined with resin for extra strength and durability. Or you can get a fiberglass door that's also very durable. Vinyl is also a very useful material when used strategically in the manufacture of garage doors. Although it's more expensive than other materials, vinyl is popular because it's dent resistant. And if you have children that are constantly hitting the door with bikes or balls, then a dent-resistant door is very important.

The most complicated part of a garage door is the opener and its hardware - the drive mechanism, the springs, the tracks, the brackets - all the parts that combine to make it work smoothly over and over and over again. There are all kinds of garage door springs and parts. One of the most important parts are the actual springs themselves. These powerful springs are under very high tension - that's what gives them the strength to lift the weight of the door. If you look at a garage door, you'll see either a set of springs, one on each side, or a long spring running across the top above the door.

The springs mounted on either side of a door are called extension springs. They're usually used on single-car garages, because their mechanisms aren't strong enough to hold the weight of a double door. You can see these springs stretched along the horizontal part of the track when the door's closed. Since there are more double garages than singles these days, the more popular spring system is the tension spring. You'll see this spring mounted to the header, just above the top of the door. Tension springs can be extremely dangerous if tampered with. It's a wound spring, which means it winds up into a coil, as opposed to the extension spring that expands and contracts. And because it winds up as the door closes, it holds a tremendous amount of tension. Any manufacturer will tell you that garage door installation of a tension spring type is a job for a professional only.

Your actual motor drive can be one of three types - chain drive, screw drive or belt drive. Many people are going with the belt drive today, even though it's the most expensive, because of it's smooth and quiet operation. But the chain drive system is also very popular because it's the most affordable. The screw drive mechanism is slow-moving, so it's used the least. But whatever type of garage door opener you use, especially if you have an automatic garage door opener to go with it (and most people do), then you probably love the convenience of not having to get out of your car in that horrible weather to open the door.

Almost all garages these days are attached to the house. Because of this, garage builders look for ways to create continuity with the house, designing it to blend with its style and color. And they've done well. You can get a wide variety of glass or acrylic windows for your garage door, to match the windows in the house. And garage doors come in many styles and colors now, for the same reason. And you know that screen door you have on your patio? Well, you can get one for your garage, too. Garage door screens allow you to leave the door open while you work in there, without being bothered by bugs and dust.

The garage tends to be a catch all for items we rarely use. Old toys, old clothes and everything else that is somewhere between junk and infrequently used, can be found there. This can lead to massive disorganized states of being. You probably have much more space than you think but you will never recognize that as long as it is buried under a mess. Clean up this area of your home and start using it wisely.

Before you begin organizing take the time to think about finding an accessible place for items you use on a daily basis. Also, think if places where you can store items you use infrequently. Use these five steps to organize your garage.

First, get everything out of the garage. Find out what you have and sort the items and categorize them. Put like items with like items and start figuring out how much stuff you have and what the best ways to organize it are. If there are items that should be in the basement or attic, put them where they belong. Items that you wish to throw out should be recycled when possible.

Separate items by purpose and use. Put up a rack to hang lawn maintenance tools. This will keep your lawn equipment out of the way but easily accessible. Put snow removal equipment together and summer items in a cabinet. Before each season, rotate your equipment. Non season items should be kept in another area.

Putting in some extra shelving and cabinets can make it easier to keep things in order. Shelves and cabinets also allow you to store more stuff with out things becoming cluttered. Mount shelves or cabinets on walls so they are not in the way. Store items that you use frequently in these cabinets. You will be able to easily locate items you use on a regular basis.

Set up accessible working areas. If your garage serves as a workshop, adding in a work bench is a good idea. Get a strong tool chest and a pegboard to store your tools and keep them in clear sight.

Move trash and recycling bins outside to the side of the house. Set up your trash and recycling bins close by for easy disposal. This will leave extra room in the garage. You also will be less inclined to keep junk because the trash will be out of sight, out of mind.

If you are handy, build the cabinets yourself. However, if you aren't a builder, buy some storage cabinets or get a handyman to install some. Organize your garage and enjoy your new found space. Start sorting through those items that causing clutter and get it in order.

The garage is a wonderful storage area. Even though the space is limited, it still presents great storage opportunities. The garage is a great choice when it comes to improving on storage space. There are many ways to go about this task.

One way is to purchase a modular storage kit that has parts and components that you can switch up to assist in solving many storage issues. You can also build a work bench for work space. Another choice is to add to the garage. If you have too much stuff stored in your garage, a modular storage kit may not give you the needed solution. Reduce the clutter of seasonal items and items by placing some of them in a basement.

Some of the solutions that are available are cabinets, storage units and more shelving. . If items need to be protected from dust and moisture then cabinets are perfect. Shelves will give you more space and they are less expensive than some of the other options. Nifty clear containers for storage can be purchased for very low prices.

Think of how great it will be the next time you are thinking about pulling out your bike and you don't have to search for it in the garage. Consider what it would be like not having to get up an extra hour early just to locate your fishing equipment in the garage. Just think about how great it will feel to walk into the garage and know exactly where things are. Imagine all of the time and stress you can eliminate by cleaning out the garage.

Put like items with like items. This is the best way to keep things in their place. By separating everything into categories you will be able to go into the garage and know that whatever you are looking for will be in a certain spot.

Use you imagination when deciding what to do with your garage. It is a great place for storage but it can be so much more. Clean out the garage and find that extra space you have been longing for. Change it into a place of relaxation or a neat storage area.

When you are cleaning out your garage, toss out those items you never use. Do not flip through every magazine or search through old bags of clothes you haven't seen in years. All of the stuff that you have not used in the past year should be thrown out. If you have not seen it in a year, you really do not need it. This can be a difficult part of the organizing process but once you do it, you will feel so much better. Months later you will have forgotten all about whatever it was you threw out.

Jerry Blackburn regularly publishes articles on topics similar to woodworking benches and workbench kits. His abstracts on garage publications bench plans are found on his website .

Garage doors don't last forever, they always need replacing. At some time your garage door will break and need replacing. This isn't actually all bad, newer garage doors have many new features which were not present on older models.

Modern garage doors contain insulation which should mean you save money on heating your home. Not only this, but it is worthwhile noting that this insulation will also provide some valuable sound proofing. If your son takes up drumming then you will greatly appreciate this sound insulation! Garage doors are also quite secure compared to how they used to be, this is very good as after all a garage door is a way into your home. Your garage is also a place to store many valuable items other than just your car. Newer garage doors also need very little maintenance which is exactly what people want! Garage doors can also be found online, often at sites that sell hardware, home furnishings (discount paint, shower curtains, etc.), or lumber.

Wood used to be a very popular material to use for garage doors, however now fiberglass and steel are now much more popular choices. These are much more durable and do not have the problems associated with swelling. These materials are available in a number of different colors and do not require much maintenance. Newer models are made from tongue and groove, this protects your garage from the elements and keeps it secure.

If you want to get natural light into your garage, but don't want to compromise your security features then you could consider some of the newer doors which have high strength plastic windows. This means you can get some much needed light into your garage without having to risk the security of your car.

There have certainly been some fantastic improvements in the technology used to create garage doors. However installing them by yourself can be very difficult, if not impossible. These doors are very large and quite heavy. If you are not experienced you could have major problems installing these. If the door should fall then it could cause you some serious injuries. You should never replace a garage door or attempt any servicing on one without any assistance. Minor servicing such as oiling the wheels and tracks can be done by yourself though. It's best to hire a professional to help you out.

If you really do want to install the door by yourself then you need to ask for some help from someone! Anybody will do which can hold a few things while you are installing the door. Make sure you start with the weatherproofing so that you are making a very functional and safe room.

You will either need to rent or buy some specialist tools such as a spring tensioning tool. You need high quality equipment as these springs are held so tightly they can kill people if not handled with the care that they deserve.

Of course you can change your garage door by yourself, you can do lots of things y yourself however that doesn't mean that you should! There are some seriously dangerous parts of this project which may convince you to hire a professional.

Jack Blacksmith routinely publishes papers on problems related to discount shower curtains and discount draperies. You can learn about his writings on discount curtains on his site.

Have a car that you wish was not sitting out in the open, but you don't have a garage to put it in? Don't fret because there are solutions to that problem. You may think that nothing can exceed the luxury of having a garage to park your car in, but not everyone is able to have a garage although there is a solution to this problem. They may not have the space to build one or can't afford to build one. This leaves two alternatives: Covering the car with a tarp every single night or investing in an open air carport.

Assuming you're not opting for the tarp, a carport can eliminate the need of having to do such things as scrape ice and brush snow off of the car in the winter. The carport can also protect the car from such elements as rain, hail storms, and even the sun. Sure, the garage may be handy because it serves as a storage space for your car and for other items, but it is the fact that a garage is not always practical that prevents someone from having one. That doesn't mean that the car has to suffer, though.

Surprisingly enough, the carport does have advantages over the garage. This may seem unheard of, but it isn't at all unreasonable. Keep reading to find out why.

The money factor

Money plays a large factor into whether or not someone has a garage or a carport. Building a garage can cost thousands, but carports are typically more affordable. Don't take out a loan to build that garage, simply invest in a carport. It is a structure that is sturdy and can protect your car from most of the elements, so there is no need to spend money you don't have. If you need to store items such as tools, invest in a small shed. The cost of the carport and the small shed will still not exceed the cost to build a garage.

Moving

If you opt for a metal carport, you can actually move it, especially if you decide that you don't like where you put it the first time. A garage can't be moved at all. Another thing is that you can take your carport with you if you ever sell your house. Some opt to do this and some do not, but it is certainly a possibility.

Easy

When building a garage you have to find a builder. This also includes getting estimates. If you are having one built rather than buying one that is pre-built, it is necessary for you to find a good builder. However, building a carport is a relatively simple task and does not require as much planning as building a garage.

They are available

Another great thing about carports is that they are easily accessible and are sold through a variety of sources. As mentioned before, there are metal carports that are available and that are very portable. You don't have to wait for weeks for your carport to be built. Your wait shouldn't be more than just a matter of days. Through getting the help of a friend or family member, you can have it ready to go in no time and have your car protected from the elements.

Very versatile

So as you can see, carports are an excellent item to have to protect your car, but it doesn't stop there. Carports make a great shelter for your vehicle and for you in the case of severe wind or winter storms. They are a definite time saving device preventing you from having to scrape and shovel your way into your car in the dead of winter and preventing you from being touched by summer's spontaneous downpours.

Car ports can also be partially enclosed depending on the level of protection from the elements that you require, the specified use you have for it and the location it is placed in. Making a carport ideal both for urban and rural spaces as they can be customized to fit a space of any size.

Have you ever inspected your garage door opener? The answer is probably not. Yet this is one mechanical device in your home that can cause serious injury if not operatiing properly. The article that follows furnishes some practical tips on how you can easily perform such an inspection and assure yourself that your garage door opener is operating properly and safely.

Have You Inspected Your Garage Door And Opener Lately - If Not, You Should!

The size of a garage door, its regular use, and the fact that it is often opened and closes with an electrical remote, are all very good reasons why both the door and the electrical opener should be tested on a regular basis. There is a real risk of severe injury from a malfunctioning garage door or opener causing the door to close too quickly.

Inspecting both your garage door and opener on a monthly basis will kept them in top working condition. Your garage door opener should be equipped with a reversal feature. If it’s not; replace it; any garage door opener made after 1992 is required to have one.

Testing Your Garage Door Opener

Perform a monthly test on the garage door opener by first determining if your garage door is accurately balanced. You’ll do this by disengaging the garage door from the remote opener and attempting to raise it manually. If the garage door will not open easily and remain open at a height between three and four feet, it needs to be adjusted by a professional.

If you garage door passes the balance test, re-engage the electric opener and open the door completely. Place a two-by-four, about an inch and a half thick, flat on the garage floor at the door’s center. Operate the electrical opener and see if the door reverses when it hits the two-by-four. If it doesn’t, call a professional to see if it can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

Inspecting Your Garage Door

If you garage door opener checks out, go ahead and inspect the garage door itself. Your garage door springs are under extremely high tension, so they should be situated where they cannot harm anyone’s fingers or hands.

Usually the door springs are found close to the garage ceiling and should be equipped with central cables so that if they snap, they will be less apt to injure any bystanders. If you notice that your garage door springs do not have retaining cables, have some installed.

Even the brackets located at the garage door’s bottom and the doors lift cable to which they are attached are attached to the springs via the door’s lift cable are under high tension. The brackets should not have their screws loosened or even adjusted. Check the springs, brackets, and pulleys for wear and if they need replacing, again leave it to the professionals.

Finally, make sure the garage door is lubricated with heavy grease and that the roller shafts are not bent so that the rollers operate smoothly.

If you have one, you probably take your garage door opener for granted. It's something you use several times a day, just like your garbage disposer, and, like your garbage disposer, you probably don't really know much about it. You just expect the opener to work flawlessly, time after time, year after year. Actually, there are reasons they don't burn out, as you'll see below. Because of this, modern garage door openers provide a level of home security, not to mention tremendous convenience around the clock.

Take some time to read on for more information about this tireless device that serves to make every home owner's life a little easier.

Automatic Garage Door Openers Are A Great Investment

The concept of a garage door system arrived during the Second World War. Garage Door Openers have been saving Americans from back injuries for over 35 years, yet there have been few new modifications or major innovations in these garage door openers. Believe it or not some people have voice activated garage door openers instead of you having to place your finger over the button when you walk from your house to the garage.

Garage door can keep the home safe because when they close the doors are locked automatically, this way you don't have to worry about locking the doors. Garage doors are important features in a security system for a number of reasons and those who use openers, however, need to be mindful of a few things. The main parts in a garage door opener system are: transmitter, the remote control, safety sensors, key pads, receiver/remote kits, screw drive and much more.

The garage door openers are automatic and so convenient they are standard in most garages today. An automatic garage door opener is not just a convenience; it's an investment in your house, and an important home appliance that will get daily use for many years to come. An automatic garage door opener is a terrific convenience and it may give you a sense of security as well.

When building a home it is sometimes confusing when trying to figure out the opening of the garage door. The rough opening for a garage door, simply put, is the actual size of the door itself. You should make sure the garage door is properly balanced you can do this by slowly opening and closing the door, when the bottom of the door hits the floor evenly and the door doesn't sway back and forth the door is balanced.

The reason garage door openers do not burn out is because the springs allow the door to open easily by pulling the door up so the opener has less strain on the motor, the springs also help if you need to open the door manually. Usually two types of springs are used linear expansion and tensional springs. The springs on your garage door can pose a safety hazard. These kinds of springs are installed over a shaft that helps roll the door up to the open position. Garage door springs are very dangerous, even when the garage is closed, as they contain large amounts of potential energy (that's just waiting to be suddenly converted to kinetic energy, ie movement) and have killed or seriously injured many people.

Some garage door openers offer heavier steel or a sturdier design. Some garage door openers do not use the steel chain pulley system; they use a screw threaded steel rod that turns to move the garage door up and down. If you are deciding on which type of garage door to purchase keep in mind the differences between wood and metal, the wood doors need to be taken care of just like a deck, you need to stain or paint it so it doesn't rot, a steel door is easier to maintain. If you decide to get a steel door the main thing to check is that it has been properly prepared to prevent rust.

Remote controls for garage door openers have come a long way. Today, you can choose from one button, two button, three button or four button remotes. Among other things, many have a remote lockout feature which basically turns off the radio receiver while you are on vacation.

The availability of accessories has increased as well like wireless keypads and keychain remotes. The article below brings you up to date on the latest features and some of the new security options that are recommended.

Latest Garage Door Opener Remote Technology Provides Security

Today’s garage door opener remotes use rolling code technology. The code changes each time you use your remote. Code grabbers are not able to acquire these new codes, only the one that was used. The last code no longer works since the system has already changed the code used.

The earliest remote transmitters were similar to remote bomb detonators used in WWII. They used a single radio frequency to activate the garage door opener. There was no security as anyone with a garage door opener remote could open any garage door equipped with an automatic door opener.

In the 1970's "dip switch" transmitters were developed to provide some security. Remotes came with 8 dip switches to set the transmitter frequency. These 8 switches provided 256 possible code combinations.

This was still not a great deal of security but a much better solution than before.

Unfortunately, few owners took advantage of this security option by changing dip switch settings from the factory default settings. It was still easy for thieves to find operators they could activate with a transmitter set at factory default.

This problem was solved by providing remotes with rolling code technology. Codes change automatically every time the operator is used. Each time a code is transmitted the system automatically creates a new code using an encoder. With billions of code possibilities, the same code is never used twice.

When you buy a remote control for your garage door opener, all the installation and code setting instructions are included.

Your garage door opener owner's manual provides instructions for reprogramming your devices. It also gives the steps to erase all code settings before reprogramming all your remotes in the event an operator is lost or stolen.

Some of the latest innovations in garage door openers involve safety, quality and security, providing protection against burglars and entrapment. Among the more recent conveniences are such things as fingerprint keyless entry and multi-function remote controls that turn on lights inside the home as well as opening garage doors.

However, there are some basics that all automatic garage door opener systems have, and it's well to have an understanding of them when it comes time to have one installed or if you're among the do-it-yourself crowd. In the article that follows, you'll find the basics you will need to know about these handy devices.

Some Considerations About Garage Door Openers

Did you ever have to get out of the car in a chilly winter night, or while a thunderous shower is pouring down, to open the garage door? Have you thought about how to make it possible to automatically open without having to leave the car? Installing a garage door open is the solution to such annoyances. A garage door opener is a motorized mechanism that helps in automatically opening and closing a garage door, without the application of manual labor. These automations can be controlled by switches installed on the garage walls, or by remote controls.

Once you have taken the decision to purchase a garage door opener, you need to take into consideration certain aspects of this invaluable device:

The Drive System

This is of tow types, the screw-drive system and the chain drive system. Some manufacturers also offer computer controlled drive appliances, but the availability of this system is limited.

• In a screw-drive system, the machinery for hoisting the door slides along a threaded shaft made of steel. Only a few rotating parts are used in the manufacture of these systems, so the maintenance is simple. The garage ceiling houses the body of the device.

• In a chain-drive system, the door is made to move upwards and downwards along its trails by the implementation of a metal chain. These are inexpensive and hence are most popular. However, these systems are noisy. The main unit is installed at the centre of the garage ceiling.

• A belt-drive structure makes the use of a rubber belt to maneuver the opener. This is the most expensive system.

• Computer-controlled drive machineries do not have the need of chains or screws. The article rests directly on top of the garage door thus the ceiling is left unoccupied. So this system is very useful for garages with limited headspace.

Power of the Motor

The larger motors with greater horsepower not only last longer, but also are absolutely necessary for maneuvering double doors. You should check if the motor starts and stops smoothly and makes the least noise while in operation.

Speed of Operation

The best quality garage door openers work at a high speed. This eliminates the need to wait at the garage door for long.

Safety

All garage door openers have features that cause the door to move in the reverse direction if it encounters some obstacle it in its path while in operation. This prevents the door from crushing any object under its weight. The inclusion of this feature is mandatory according to federal laws. An electronic infrared beam that activates the safety system when it meets an obstruction is used to direct these automatic reversion sensors.

To prevent the stealth of the transmission signals, the garage door openers use a technology that changes that emanating code every time the device is used.
